How Mega Concerts Like Coldplay’s Are Boosting India’s Economy

India’s music and entertainment industry is growing fast, and mega concerts are now playing a big role in supporting the country’s economy. One of the biggest examples of this is the recent Coldplay concert held in Ahmedabad. The event brought over 2 lakh fans to the city and helped generate more than ₹600 crore in revenue.
These large-scale events are more than just fun — they are economic powerhouses. The Coldplay concert added nearly ₹400 crore directly to Ahmedabad’s economy. It also boosted GST collections by over ₹70 crore. Hotels were fully booked, with some luxury stays costing as much as ₹1.6 lakh for two nights. Local restaurants, taxis, cafes, and shops all saw a big increase in customers.


There’s also what experts call a “multiplier effect.” For every ₹100 spent on a concert ticket, people spent around ₹585 more on things like travel, food, clothes, shopping, and more. Fashion websites saw a big jump in concert-style clothing sales during the event.
These concerts also create many jobs. Around 15,000 people were hired temporarily to help organize the Coldplay show, with over half of them coming from local areas.


Most of the concertgoers were young, with almost 80% under the age of 35. Many came from smaller towns and cities, showing that live music is becoming popular across India, not just in metros.
