Bawari Basanti, The Storyteller with a Song

Mahima Dayal Mathur, better known to the outside world as Bawari Basanti, is a self-taught Indian storyteller and musician whose works are heavily influenced by real conversations with various beings. She creates soundscapes that are both intimate and universal, exploring human emotions, philosophies, and the meaning of existence through her music.

Bawari began her musical career when she was nine years old, under the direction of her grandmother, Smt. Lalita Dayal, a classical music instructor from Hindustan. She continued to hone her craft at Prayaag Sangeet Samiti and Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music while also pursuing her education at prestigious institutions like St. Cardiff University, The Asian College of Journalism, and Stephen’s College Starting with her duo project Basanti aur Woah, Bawari Basanti quickly made her mark, releasing acclaimed singles like “Chalein Kahin,” “Kya Bolein,” and “Izehar.” Audiences were captivated by her honest debut EP, Underwater, released in 2018, and her follow-up, Aarzoo, released in 2021.
Bawari has performed on some of the most prestigious stages, including the VH1 Supermoon, the Jodhpur RIFF Festival, the Mauritius Music Expo, and the Hornbill Festival, in addition to her solo work. She was recognized as a OneBeat Virtual Fellow by the U.S. Department of State and contributed musically to projects like Amazon Prime Video’s Rainbow Rishta and Sony Liv’s Good Bad Girl.
Bawari Basanti is committed to social causes in addition to her artistic accomplishments. Through the Prajna Foundation, she directs musical projects like Dilli Ke Dil Se to support underprivileged girls.
